RAW

The Research and Analysis Wing, commonly known as RAW or R&AW, is India’s external intelligence agency. It is responsible for collecting and assessing foreign intelligence, supporting strategic warning, and informing Indian decision-makers on external threats and opportunities affecting national security.

RAW is associated with India’s regional security environment, especially developments involving Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, the Indian Ocean, and neighboring states in South Asia. Its work is generally external, while India’s Intelligence Bureau is primarily associated with domestic intelligence and internal security.

Because external intelligence work is classified, public information about RAW is limited and often based on official references, historical accounts, court records, memoirs, investigative reporting, and foreign government claims. Allegations about specific covert operations should be treated cautiously unless they are officially confirmed or well documented.

RAW matters because India’s security environment includes nuclear-armed rivals, disputed borders, cross-border militancy concerns, maritime competition, terrorism risks, cyber threats, great-power rivalry, and instability in neighboring regions. Foreign intelligence helps India assess risks before they directly affect its territory, citizens, military forces, or diplomatic interests.

The agency is geopolitically relevant because intelligence assessments can shape India’s policy toward Pakistan, China, the Indian Ocean, Afghanistan, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and major power partners such as the United States, Russia, Japan, and European states.

RAW is also important for understanding how India separates external intelligence, domestic intelligence, military intelligence, and law-enforcement functions. That distinction matters when analyzing counterterrorism, border crises, diplomatic disputes, covert-action allegations, and regional security policy.
