Main Body
On 1 October 2026, HM Government said the Ministry of Defence had extended a £190 million Airbus maintenance contract for the RAF A400M Atlas fleet. On the same date, a separate HM Government notice said UK Defence Innovation and the Department for Transport had opened a funding call for technologies to improve transport security and resilience.
Under the Airbus arrangement, HM Government said RAF A400M mission-capable aircraft were expected to rise from 10 to 13 by the end of 2027, while the contract was expected to sustain more than 350 UK jobs and support NATO commitments. In the innovation call, HM Government said UK Defence Innovation and the Department for Transport sought proposals covering threat detection, passenger security and wider transport network resilience, with successful projects eligible for up to £350,000 and lasting no more than 12 months.
The announcements followed recent UK defence policy and industrial measures. On 24 September 2026, HM Government said defence spending with Scottish industry reached £2.53 billion in 2025/26, a 13% real-terms increase that supported 12,200 jobs. On 18 September 2026, HM Government announced housing reforms tied to a £9.2 billion Defence Housing Strategy, including steps to give military families more input into housing decisions.
The practical significance was readiness and resilience. HM Government linked higher A400M availability to RAF operational capacity and NATO tasks, which made the maintenance contract relevant to airlift planning as well as fleet servicing. HM Government presented the security call as a way to strengthen transport network protection through funded projects.
