In a July 1 update, the European Environment Agency said most EU member states are on track for 2020-2029 national emission-reduction commitments for key air pollutants, but ammonia reduction remains difficult.

The July 1 package also included an updated city air-quality ranking based on long-term exposure, according to the European Environment Agency, reinforcing that pollution exposure is being tracked not only nationally but at urban level.

The air-quality findings sit alongside broader EEA monitoring rather than a single pollution story. On March 3, the European Environment Agency linked air, noise and chemical pollution with depression, anxiety and other mental-health concerns, while calling for more research and action. By contrast, water-quality monitoring showed stronger results: the European Environment Agency said 85% of Europe’s bathing waters met the EU’s highest quality standard in 2025, with 96% of monitored EU sites meeting minimum standards.
