The European Commission imposed a €550 million penalty on AliExpress after finding that the platform failed to meet Digital Services Act duties to assess and reduce risks linked to illegal, unsafe and counterfeit goods offered to EU users, according to the European Commission. Ars Technica reported that regulators identified weak removal systems for dangerous and counterfeit items and said AliExpress described itself as “shocked” by the penalty, which the Commission called the largest DSA fine to date.
Why It Matters
The case moves EU digital enforcement from rule-setting into high-value platform penalties. The Commission, as the EU executive body responsible for monitoring implementation of EU law, is using the DSA to press marketplaces on consumer-facing product risks rather than only content moderation. It also follows a separate July 16 step in which the Commission issued binding Digital Markets Act specifications requiring Google to improve AI interoperability on Android and share data with third-party search providers, according to the European Commission.
Perspective
The AliExpress decision is narrower than the Google interoperability action but points in the same regulatory direction: large platforms are being required to change operational systems, not only pay fines. As GPS previously reported, the AliExpress case centers on DSA compliance over unsafe, illegal and counterfeit products. The Google measure, by contrast, targets competition conditions in search and mobile AI; Ars Technica reported that it covers search access and Android features including wake-word activation, automation and screen-content access.
